Faulkner once mentioned in an interview that the title was allegorical. All he had wanted to imply was that here was a woman who had a tragic life and nothing could be done about it. For Faulkner, offering this woman a rose was like a salute to hardships. I think this straightforward perspective makes the most sense. It also persuades us to indulge in a more compassionate reading and not to judge Miss Emily, and that forget she's a human being who had a tragic life...
