I came across a promotional newspaper supplement about some electronic stuff and was surprised to see that Tarkan’s photo was used for the promotion of a 20GB memory card. Those who would buy the product would get a “Tarkan” bonus as well: his video and 10 songs in digital format. Seeing this, I remembered the latest pose of Tarkan in an advertisement to boost the sales of Turkish oranges in the Russian market and I could not help thinking about the relationship between celebrities and consumer culture.

One of the sources I checked was Chris Roje’s Celebrity (2001) where he claimed that “capitalist systems want individuals to be both desiring objects and objects of desire.” I could see the truth in his claim simply by looking at my own and other people’s individual consumption habits. There are many times when we prefer one product to the other just because the product we have chosen is linked to the celebrity figure we love… Beyonce’s “True Star” fragrance collection, Beckham’s Armani underwear… examples are plentiful here in Turkey and outside Turkey.

What is common in visual representations of these products is that while celebrities are used as objects of desire, we (customers or fans) are asked to play the role of desiring objects and feel fulfilled and complete once we have bought the products being promoted.

There is also another way of looking at the relationship between celebrities and consumer culture.  Celebrities like Tarkan, Beyonce and Beckham must be making some money by simply accepting to give their names to the products or by accepting to be associated with the products. I am not saying this is right or wrong. I am just trying to point out that by doing so, these celebrities inevitably say “yes” to their own commodification as well. They lose their agency and turn into commodities through what they offer to the customers and/or their fans.

And “us” as customers and/or fans? What do we do? We follow our beloved celebrities, feel gratified and enjoy the sense of belonging to a group because there are many others out there buying the same products as we do… And we happily consume those who we say we love so much….

Yekta Kopan Kimdir?

1968’de doğdu. Hayalet Gemi dergisindeki çalışmalarıyla tanındı. İlk kitabı Fildişi Karası 2000 yılında yayımlandı. 2006 yılında İstanbul Uluslararası Tiyatro Festivali bünyesinde Tiyatro DOT tarafından sahnelenen ve bir Bülent Erkmen projesi olan İki Kişilik Bir Oyun’un metnini yazdı. Oyun Almanya, İtalya ve Hollanda’da sahnelendi. dtv (Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag) tarafından yayınlanan Alles Blaue, alles Grüne dieser Welt seçkisinde bir öyküsüyle yer aldı. Daha Önce Tanışmış mıydık? adındaki e-kitabı altKitap.com tarafından okura ulaştırıldı. 6 yaş öncesi için yazdığı ve Şilili ressam Alex Pelayo tarafından resimlenen çocuk kitabı Burun, Marsık Yayıncılık tarafından 2009 yılında yayımlandı. Aşk Mutfağından Yalnızlık Tarifleri 2002 yılında Sait Faik Hikâye Armağanı’na, Karbon Kopya Dünya Kitap 2007 Yılın Telif Kitabı Ödülü’ne değer görüldü.

Mevsim Normalleri (Yekta Kopan)

1. Yekta Kopan’ın hikayesi, haber müdürünün sözleri ile başlamaktadır. Bu sözler hikayeye ve okuyucunun hikayeyi anlamasına nasıl yön vermektedir?
2. Hikayedeki anlatıcının özelliği nedir? Kopan’ın böylesi bir anlatıcı seçmesindeki neden(ler) ne olabilir? Yorumlayınız.

7. Sefalıköy kasabası halkı hikayede neyi temsil etmektedir? Davranışlarının ardında hangi nedenler yatmaktadır? Kasaba halkı size neyi anlatmaktadır?
8. Hikayenin ilk paragraflarında rastladığımız hemşire ile ilgili anlatımlar medyanın kullandığı teknikleri anlamamıza nasıl yardımcı oluyor. Televizyonda ya da diğer medya metinlerinde hikayedekine benzer örnekler bulabilir misiniz? Bulduğunuz örnekleri arkadaşlarınızla tartışın.
9. “Mevsim Normalleri”nin diğer bölümlerini de dikkatle inceleyerek medyanın haber hazırlarken kullandığı teknikleri bulunuz. Bu tekniklerin arkasındaki anlamları ve seyircinin üzerindeki olası etkilerini tartışınız. Sizce her bir seyirci aynı şekilde etkilenebilir mi? Nedenleri tartışınız.

Discussion Questions for Benny’s Video (Michael Haneke, 1992)

Discuss the significance of the opening sequence of the film where we see the slaughter of a pig: What does the opening sequence reveal about the story? What kind of a camera is used and why? Why is there a zoom? What is the significance of the pause and the rewind? What do you hear in the background? How do you react to what you see and hear? What color is the title written in and why? What does the opening sequence tell you about how media texts work and the spectators in general?

Describe Benny’s room in detail (e.g. What is the significance of the monitor that shows the street?). Then discuss what the description could tell you about Benny, his world and the contemporary world.

Describe the flat Benny and his parents live in. What does the description reveal about the relationship between Benny and his parents?

Identify the ways in which Benny and his parents communicate with each other.

Comment on how nuclear family is represented in the film in relation to Benny and the young girl whom Benny meets outside the video store.

What mainly motivates Benny’s parents to cover up the slaughter of the girl in the story?
